An Award for 'The Ballad of Miss Kay'

Miss Kay with her 1962 Cranberry High School square dance team.
Just learned that my story "The Ballad of Miss Kay," which ran in Blue Ridge Country magazine last year, won an award of merit in the International Magazine Association's annual competition.

This is the story of my high school's legendary square dance coach--the best coach of anything I ever knew--who led a school of about 350 students to two national championships and a number of state titles. Her teams retired the Old Smokey trophy at the Mountain Youth Jamboree in Asheville (probably more of an accomplishment than the national titles) and led to the writing of my novel CLOG!, which is awaiting a publisher.
