Public Broadcasting's State Funding Cut by Governor

It looks like public broacasting in Virginia, which Republicans love to hate (but often listen to), is going to be hit with a meat cleaver from Gov. Bob McDonnell's office. The McDonnell line-item veto will cost $424,000 next year, or 16 percent of the budget for public broadcasting in Virginia.

According to The Richmond Times-Dispatch today,  McDonnell used the line item veto to reduce the appropriation, passed over an earlier veto. Said McDonnell, “In today’s free market, with hundreds of radio and television programs, government should not be subsidizing one particular group of stations."

The reduction is in appropriations for educational funding. That remains at $2.2 million, the same as last year.
