City buses cram into the Campbell Avenue garage in downtown Roanoke during lunch Wednesday. Getting out is the problem. The buses often tie up traffic down Campbell as they force their way back into it.
FYI, those buses are actually REDUCING traffic Downtown and all over Roanoke....along with our collective carbon footprint. And much of Downtown's car-driving public tends to force their right-of-way on these buses, which are simply trying to get through their routes on time so their riders can get to school and work! Many cars that pass through Downtown carry only one person, the driver. At their fullest capacity, each of those buses could keep up to 70-80 cars off the road, which ultimately saves on traffic! What would you rather be stuck behind, one full bus or that many cars? One person switching to public transit can reduce daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds, or more than 4,800 pounds in a year. How did you ever win awards for environmentalism without knowing such basic facts?
Anon: I wish you'd sign your name. Drive-by criticism is without merit. In any case, I didn't give me the award, but I am also not anti-bus. The bus drivers tend to terrorize drivers and pedestrians and even killed an old man a year or so ago. I'm not imagining that. There is a real value in public transportation, but people who ride the buses in Roanoke most often don't have cars, so the buses aren't reducing traffic downtown. That's an illusion. Once again: I know the facts and I agree with the value of buses. But let's try to promote people riding them instead of being in cars. That would make a dif (and I ride my bike when I can).
Yes Sir Dan Smith do you still stand with this point of view of the drivers of these said Valley Metro buses are still terrorizing downtown Campbell Avenue thank you sir JJ Richards
As you say these buses push there way out of Campbell court.. Hold A second Have your ever driven a 35 ft bus in downtown Roanoke??? When People in there cars could care less if they move out of anyones way while they talk on cell phone. Stand at the corner of Campbell and Jefferson see how many cars cut off people walking. The buses take about 3 mins to get out of downtown.. Talk to city cunciel see if they will put up lights like we have a Fire stations to stop traffic. So Buses can make it out safely.. I say drive a 35 ft bus Downtown and see just how hard it is then say our drivers are unsafe and push there way into traffic....
