Is Speaking Spanish Un-American?

Scottie Nell Hughes and friend.
A Trump supporter named Scottie Nell Hughes (news director for the Tea Party Network) criticized VP nominee Tim Kaine for speaking Spanish in his first appearance with Hillary Clinton by saying, "I didn’t have to get a translator for anything that was going on at the [Republican National Convention] this week."

Actually, she did. One of the Hispanic speakers at the RNC spoke some Spanish.

Denigrating people who speak two languages is a sign of intense ignorance, something Republicans seem to have no problem with. Problem is that they alienate voters. Many, many voters.

Consider this (from the Guardian): The U.S. is the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, behind Mexico and just ahead of Spain. In the U.S. 41 million people speak Spanish, 11 million of them bilingual.
