Local Colors Will Go On Despite Weather

This young woman from the Philippines expresses my rain sentiment exactly.

Local Colors will go on in downtown Roanoke Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with a Navy Band concert, regardless of the weather conditions, says the executive director Beth Lutjen. Local Colors is one of the defining events of the Roanoke Valley, bringing together more than 100 cultures living here for the past 25 years for a celebration of diversity.

A heavy, soaking rain is scheduled for the first half of Saturday, and could cause major interference.

This is my favorite event in the Roanoke Valley (one I love to photograph), but it is not protected by rain dates, primarily because the downtown Roanoke park is a popular place to hold events and, consequently, it is book through the warm months without much breathing room. Here's what Beth has to say:

"Unfortunately, there is no option to postpone so we are a rain or shine event!  We have rented the park for Saturday and vendors have purchased food to prepare with many of them importing items for this event.  So the show will go on.

"The stage offers a lot of cover for the performers and each vendor is under a tent / canape.  We will have some tents in the children’s area and we have reserved the deck on the library which also has some cover.  We will have some activities going on in the lower level of the library in Blue Ridge Literacy so there are some indoor options.

"The U.S. Navy Band will open the event at 11:00 and will perform a mini concert at 3:00 of music from around the world.

"We are hoping…and praying in many languages and faiths…for a window of clearing for the festival and encouraging vendors and the public to bring your poncho,  your sense of humor and patience!

"I am sorry that rescheduling is not an option, but as you can imagine, the park is booked up this time of year."
